  • Decide whether you want n8n Cloud or self-hosting, and who maintains updates and backups for a self-hosted instance.
  • Make sure credentials are created in your own n8n instance rather than the provider's.
  • Ask for an error workflow that notifies you when an execution fails.
  • Request exported workflow files plus a short document explaining each workflow's trigger and steps.

FAQ

Should I self-host n8n or use n8n Cloud?

Self-hosting gives more control over data and execution limits but requires server maintenance, updates and backups. n8n Cloud removes that overhead; review n8n's current license and plan terms for your use case.

Can an n8n workflow built by a provider be moved to my own instance?

Yes. Workflows export as JSON and can be imported into another instance, after which credentials must be recreated there. Ask for exports as part of handover.

What is the difference between an n8n service and an n8n workflow template?

A template is a ready-made workflow you import and configure yourself, while a service builds or adapts workflows to your tools and requirements, usually with testing and documentation.
